New York Limits Hospital Which are Covered for Breast Cancer Surgery Under Medicaid.

As of March 1, 2009, New York’s Medicaid program will only pay for breast cancer surgery if the surgery is done at a hospital or ambulatory surgery center doing at least 30 breast cancer surgeries per year. This includes mastectomies and lumpectomies. Hospitals and centers that are not covered for breast cancer surgery will still be covered for diagnostic tests, reconstruction, chemotherapy and radiation. The new policy is based on the growing body of research which shows that hospitals doing a higher volume of breast cancer surgery have better outcomes that hospitals doing a low volume.
